Cracked pointing, open gaps or weeds between slabs?

Patio repointing means replacing failed material between paving slabs. It is also called patio pointing, paving joint repair or slab joint repair. It can be appropriate when the slabs are sound but the joints have cracked, crumbled or washed out.

A clean patio with missing joints needs a different decision from a dirty patio with sound pointing. A rocking slab, a sunken edge or water collecting by the house needs assessment beyond joint filling. Repointing should not hide those problems.

Cleaning, joint replacement or a different repair?

Sound joints, dirty paving

Cleaning may be enough. Do not remove serviceable joints just because the surface has algae or staining.

Stable slabs, failed joints

Repointing may be suitable after the old filling and construction have been checked.

Moving slabs or recurring puddles

Check bedding, levels and drainage before choosing a joint finish.

Small blocks, loose sand

Conventional block paving usually needs re-sanding, not rigid slab pointing. Ask for the surface to be identified.

Patio pointing, jointing or re-grouting?

Homeowners describe this work as patio jointing, re-pointing slabs or re-grouting a patio. Repointing patio joints means removing failed filling and replacing it with a compatible material, rather than spreading a thin layer over the gaps. Porcelain grout and block paving re-sanding need different assessments.

How the work is assessed and planned

Assess the cause

Start with wide photos, joint close-ups, your postcode and access details. Slab movement, pooling water and damaged bedding need assessment before joint replacement is agreed.

Prepare sound joints

Where repointing is suitable, failed filling needs appropriate removal without damaging slab edges. Clean the surface and joints using a method suited to the paving, keep outlets clear and check the required joint depth.

Choose and apply a compatible system

Agree the material after checking the paving, bedding and joint sizes. Follow that product’s preparation and application requirements rather than choosing on colour alone.

Protect the finish

Weather, drying and curing requirements determine the work sequence. Keep people and pets off for the advised period and follow the agreed aftercare before washing or moving furniture back.

Which jointing material is suitable?

There is no single material that suits every patio. The options below are subject to inspection; they are not a specification for your paving.

Sand and cement / mortar-based pointing

A compatible sand-and-cement or proprietary mortar system can give a firm traditional joint on suitable rigidly laid paving. It needs careful mixing, depth and finishing; a rigid joint can crack if the slabs move, and careless application can mark porous stone. A thin skim over failed joints is not a repair.

Resin and brush-in jointing compounds

Some resin-based compounds are brushed into prepared joints, which can make application practical on suitable paving. Brush-in describes the method, not one universal chemistry: products vary in drainage, bedding, width, depth and weather requirements. Poor compatibility or preparation can cause failure, and residue can mark some surfaces. The actual system is agreed after inspection.

Porcelain and block paving

Porcelain may require a compatible exterior grout with suitable joint widths and careful residue removal. Conventional flexible block paving generally needs the specified jointing sand instead of rigid slab pointing. These are not interchangeable treatments.

Questions about patio repointing in Surrey and nearby areas

What is patio repointing?

It is the replacement of failed joint material between patio slabs. It can renew joints on sound paving, but does not reset slabs or correct defective bedding.

Will repointing fix loose slabs?

No. Joint replacement does not repair unstable bedding or reset paving levels. Moving, sunken or rocking slabs need assessment first; the scope of any separate repair must be agreed before repointing.

Can you choose the material from a photo?

Photos help with initial advice, but joint dimensions, bedding, drainage and the paving material may need an inspection. No particular brand or system is promised before suitability is checked.

Can cleaning and repointing be arranged together?

Yes, they can be assessed as a combined job. The surface, existing joints, weather and product requirements determine the sequence, which may need more than one visit.
