Sand loss is not the same as failed patio mortar

Conventional flexible block paving typically relies on jointing sand between the blocks. Cleaning can expose depleted joints, but filling them with rigid slab pointing is not an equivalent treatment. Permeable block systems have their own specified joint aggregate and must be identified first.

Re-sanding does not reset sunken blocks, fix failed edge restraints or repair the sub-base. If a driveway has ruts or moving blocks, show those areas before considering a surface refresh.

Check the construction and allow for drying

  • Show the whole drive or path, the block joints and any edge movement.
  • Say whether vehicles use the surface and flag any sunken wheel tracks.
  • Identify a known permeable paving system so its specified aggregate can be checked.
  • Weather and surface dryness affect joint filling; cleaning and sanding may need separate stages.

How the work is assessed and planned

Identify the system

Check whether the blocks are conventional flexible paving or a permeable system, and identify settlement or loose edges.

Clean appropriately

Where cleaning is agreed, use a suitable approach and manage debris so that drainage outlets are not obstructed.

Dry and replenish

Allow the required drying conditions, then replenish with a compatible specified jointing material. The application method follows the system requirements.

Check and advise

Discuss any further topping-up or protection needed after the joints settle. Re-sanding is not a promise of weed-free or maintenance-free paving.

Which jointing material is suitable?

There is no single material that suits every patio. The options below are subject to inspection; they are not a specification for your paving.

Conventional jointing sand

Kiln-dried jointing sand may be appropriate for conventional flexible block paving, subject to the paving specification and dry application conditions.

Permeable paving aggregate

Permeable systems may require a specified graded aggregate rather than ordinary fine jointing sand. Identify the system before replenishing joints.

No automatic sealer

Sealing is not included or promised as part of this service guide. Any additional treatment needs separate discussion and compatibility checks.

Questions about block paving re-sanding after cleaning

Will re-sanding stop all weeds?

No. Seeds can settle in surface debris and germinate later. Appropriate joint filling supports maintenance, but is not a weed-free or maintenance-free guarantee.

Can a driveway be sanded straight after washing?

The paving and joints need the conditions required for the selected material. Conventional dry jointing sand generally needs a dry surface, so weather may require a separate stage.

Will sand fix sunken blocks?

No. Settlement, failed restraints or sub-base problems need assessment separately from replenishing joint material.
